December 2 The Bowery Mission helps hundreds of homeless men and women by offering meals, shelter, showers, clothing and spiritual guidance. Join our Charitable Committee on Tuesday, April 13th to help prepare and serve a meal through the Bowery Mission’s Meal and Program Support Project. Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. November 24 Presented by: Canadian Consulate General, in association with The Americas Society and the Council of the Americas The Honourable John Manley "Progress and Partnership in Uncertain Times" Minister Manley will provide an update on Canada's economic outlook and address the changes that our neighbouring country has undergone since the fiscal crisis of the mid 90's. He will elaborate on the government's efforts to strengthen Canada's framework for future challenges in the global economy. Minister Manley will also report on the progress of the Canada-U.S. "Smart Border" Initiative - a model for border efficiency, innovation and security. Time: 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. November 22 The Canadian Club packed the Canadian Consulate to watch the first-ever outdoor NHL game that was played at Commonwealth Stadium, between the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens. This game was played in front of a sold-out crowd of 57,167; these fans braved November temperatures that didn't climb above -19 °C to be part of the historic game. Through the harsh temperatures and a wind chill, the Montreal Canadiens beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in the NHL's first outdoor game. As an added bonus, a “warm-up” game was played beforehand, with former stars of both teams, including Wayne Gretzky, Grant Fuhr and Guy Lafleur. The Oilers beat the Canadians 2-0 during this historic pre-game event. A special thanks to Molson Canadian for providing some fine Canadian brew. Also, I think everyone really enjoyed that delicious New York Pizza being served up between the games. November 16 It’s time for the annual Canadian Football League classic. The 2003 Grey Cup will be held in Regina, the home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Because the game is not being broadcast in the US we will not be having a Grey Cup party unless you receive a last minute blast email. November 14 106th annual Canadian Society of New York Ball at Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. This prestigious black-tie event honored two eminent Canadians who have devoted much of their careers to championing an ongoing friendship and partnership between Canada and the United States. The honorees were Senator Jerry S. Grafstein, Q.C and Pamela Wallin, Canada's Consul General to New York. Senator Jerry Grafstein is a sitting member of the Senate of Canada where he is co-chairman of the Canada/U.S. Parliamentary Group. He is a founder of media companies in Toronto, the U.S., Europe and South America. Grafstein is a Queen's Counsel (Q.C). attorney practicing corporate and communications law in Toronto. He has published two books: Beyond Imagination and The Making of Parliamentary Poet Laureate. Pamela Wallin currently serves as Canada's Consul General in New York City. She is among Canada's best known journalists with a television career spanning almost 30 years. As one of Canada's pioneering female broadcasters, Wallin's accomplishments included anchoring national network newscasts and she was host-producer of many different award-winning current affairs programs. Wallin is the author of two books: Since You Asked and Speaking of Success. November 1 We will be participating in the Central Park Conservancy's Get Dirty on Saturdays program where volunteers assist with a horticultural or maintenance project in Central Park for a few hours on a Saturday. Special thanks to Jason Chrein who secured tickets to the sold-out event! This was an exclusive members only event and the tickets were available to the Canadian Club members even after Ticketmaster had sold-out. October 18 New Yorkers came together to run, walk, wheel, and skate their way around 5Km of Central Park. This annual event celebrates the courage of Terry Fox, raises public awareness and funds for cancer research. Thank you to all those who made the 2003 Terry Fox run a resounding success! YES Network is producing a story about The Terry Fox Run in New York that is expected to be broadcast in late November. July 8 A group of volunteers gathered at the historic Bowery Mission to serve a hot meal to over 80 homeless men and women. The Canadian Club of New York hosted a fabulous Canada Day Celebration! Special guests included Canadian Consul General Pamela Wallin, CBS White House Correspondent and News Anchor John Roberts, Ambassador Gilbert Laurin and Delegate Generale Michel Robitaille. The Canada Day Celebration featured great food and drinks from Canada and the music of fellow Canadian Andrew Rathbun and his jazz quartet. We also featured New York's first all-Canadian Ice Wine Martini Bar with Iceberg Vodka (made from 12,000 year old naturally pure iceberg water from Canada) and Inniskillin Wine’s world-class and award winning Canadian icewine. June 29 The Charitable Events Committee participated in the 5-mile run/walk organized by the Achilles Track Club of NY. Achilles is a worldwide organization, inspired by the legacy of Canadian Terry Fox, that encourages people with all kinds of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics. The Race of Hope & Possibility was a special event honoring the courage of Trisha Meili, the Central Park Jogger and Achilles Track Club board chair. After years of anonymity, Trisha has recently revealed her identity publicly and describes her experience in a new book, "I am the Central Park Jogger: A Story of Hope and Possibility." May 19 A delicious gourmet dinner was enjoyed by all, followed by an exciting Ottawa Senators vs. New Jersey Devils game on the big screen. Eight minutes into the third period the Senators took the lead and finished up 3 to 1. May 18 Thanks to all our members who volunteered to chaperone school-aged participants in New York's 18th annual AIDS Walk, the world's largest AIDS fundraising event! May 6 A group of volunteers gathered at the historic Bowery Mission to serve a hot meal to over 80 homeless men and women. May 3 The Charitable Committee wishes to thank the 24 members who participated in NY Cares Annual Spring Clean-Up. Our volunteers worked hard to tidy up the area around the historic carousel in Forest Park, Queens. The after-party hosted by NY Cares rewarded our efforts with free beer and all-you-can-eat donuts— a Canadian dream come true! April 24 We had a great turn-out of 22 members and friends for this memorable night of Off-Broadway Theatre. Pre-theatre drinks and munchies in Soho were followed by a high-energy production of Job: The HipHop Musical, a Canadian show making its NYC debut. Following the show, we enjoyed an exclusive, post-theatre sit-down with the two young stars of the play, Eli Batalion and Jerome Sabil of Montreal. April 15 The opening ceremonies of the 35th Annual Model UN is traditionally an exclusive event reserved for conference participants and VIPs. This year, a small number of Canadian Club members had the rare opportunity to sit in the UN's General Assembly and attend the keynote address by Dr. Bernard Patry, Member of the Canadian Parliament and Chairman for the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. April 10 An enthusiastic group gathered in the Grille Room of the Canadian Club to raise a glass of (really cheap) beer while re-living Canada's last-minute victory in the final game of the 1972 Canada-Russia series. March 22 A hearty group of 20 volunteers welcomed spring by participating in Central Park's Get Dirty program. Our day included raking, litter pick-up and spreading mulch in the gardens surrounding the 72nd Street entrance on the east side of the park. March 19 Members enjoyed complimentary passes to the CUNY Graduate Center's screening of Canadian filmmaker Kevin McMahon's feature-length documentary on the life and work of Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan. The evening also featured a panel discussion, moderated by Canada's Consul General to New York, Pamela Wallin. Following the event, members had an opportunity to meet with Ms. Wallin, Mr. McMahon and some of the panelists at a reception hosted by the Canadian Club. March 15 In true St. Patrick's Day spirit, members gathered at the Canadian-owned Park Avenue Country Club to raise a glass of cheer while watching the Ottawa Senators beat up on the NY Islanders. February 27 The AGM and reception at the Canadian Club is a wonderful opportunity for members to catch up on club events, familiarize themselves with the club's executive and network with other members. Thank you to all who attended. February 23 Did you know that 3 out of every 4 curlers who walk the Earth are Canadian? This social event attracted a dozen members and friends, whose curling experience ranged from beginner to intermediate. Post-game traditions were also respected, with a buffet dinner and drinks following the curling matches. February 15 The volunteers of the Charitable Committee joined forces with the kitchen staff at the Bowery Mission to prepare and serve a hot meal to over 100 homeless men and women as part of the Meal and Program Support Project. February 13 The Grille Room at the Canadian Club swelled with pride as our members re-lived two of Canadian hockey's finest moments: the Men's and Women's Gold Medal games of the 2002 Winter Olympics, including both medal ceremonies featuring our national anthem. As if that wasn't enough, the crowd also enjoyed really cheap beer in a friendly pub environment—a winning combination! January 25 The Charitable Committee extends a big thank you to our team of volunteers who bundled up for a productive day of raking leaves as part of Central Park's Get Dirty volunteer program. January 16 We had a terrific crowd of more than 100 people attend our membership reception on January 16th in the Library at The Penn Club, the home of the Canadian Club of New York!
