Jay Lorsch, Harvard Business School & How have Canada and the United States responded to changes in corporate governance brought in by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) in the wake of a series of corporate financial scandals, including those affecting Enron, Tyco International, and WorldCom? The Canadian Association of New York Foundation, the Canadian Consulate General in New York, and the Canada Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars invite you to join us for this Borders Breakfast featuring two leading international experts on corporate governance, Jay Lorsch of the Harvard Business School and Edward Waitzer of the Canadian law firm, Stikeman Elliott. In doing so, they take direct aim at the fundamental flaws in our regulatory framework and discuss whether SOX reforms have gone too far. Lorsch’s and Waitzer’s views are the subject of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars’ spring edition of One Issue Two Voices, to be launched at this breakfast event. Jay W. Lorsch is the Louis Kirstein Professor of Human Relations at the Harvard Business School where he is currently chair of its Global Corporate Governance Initiative. April 6th The Canadian Association of New York Foundation and the Canadian Consulate General are pleased to invite you to join us for this Borders Breakfast featuring leading Canadian energy expert, Dr. Michael Raymont, CEO of EnergyINet Inc. Dr. Raymont will share his extensive knowledge of Canada’s substantial energy assets and discuss the role that Canada plays in North American and global energy security. Fresh from a visit to Asia, he will also be able to share the latest insight on the role that emerging economies like China and India will play in world energy. In less than 25 years, world demand for oil is expected to be 70 percent more than it is today. Conventional oil and gas resources are declining, and environmental priorities are challenging how we look for and develop new energy sources. Access to stable, reliable and easily accessible sources of energy is imperative to sustain economic growth and a high quality of life. The world of energy is undergoing tremendous changes and EnergyINet is focused on the role that new research and leading-edge technologies can play in helping Canada become an energy superpower. Designed to bridge the gap between research, industry and governments, EnergyINet brings these players together to look for real world solutions to overcome tomorrow’s energy production and related environmental challenges. Dr. Michael Raymont became EnergyINet's first permanent Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in October 2005. Michael has extensive business and government leadership experience. Michael holds Bachelor of Science (Hons.) and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from Bristol University and the University of Calgary respectively, and was a Killam Scholar. He holds two patents, has authored numerous publications and presentations principally on technology commercialization and economic development. Michael’s work has taken him to China numerous times where he has witnessed first-hand how the country’s appetite for energy has grown and how the country is becoming a dominant force in the global economy.
March 13th The Canadian Association of New York in coordination with HEC Alumni invite you to an evening with distinguished speaker Dr. Stephen Blank, Pace University, who will discuss the topic: “Love and War: Surprising Developments in North America” Arguably, Canada/US relations have been on a two tier track for the past year. Throughout 2005, national leaders on both sides of the border muttered threats and kicked each other in the shins. Last year, after Ottawa decided not to join the Ballistic Missile Defense program, Time columnist Stephen Handelman wrote, “Canada's stock seems be hovering at North Korea level in Washington.” Other sensitive issues include US demands on passports, the Senate’s vote to keep the border shut to Canadian cattle, alleged American gun trafficking and the softwood lumber dispute. Despite the mix of grievances and political posturing on these issues, we see substantial movement toward a more efficient North American economic system. Reports from the Security and Prosperity Partnership Working Groups set up after the Bush-Fox-Martin meeting in Waco illustrate a wide array of activities taking place under the political and journalistic radars with many initiatives led by business groups, border communities and trade corridor associations. Why is this going on? What is likely to happen next? And what difference will the new Conservative government in Ottawa make in this situation? Dr. Stephen Blank Stephen Blank has written widely on Canada and North American developments and appears frequently on Canadian radio and television and as a speaker at conferences and meetings. He has toured Canada for the United States Information Service's American Participant Program. He was Director of Canadian Programs at the Americas Society-Council of the Americas. For the past seven years, he served as Managing Director of the PanAmerican Partnership for Business Education, an alliance of four North American business schools. He is the author or co-author of eleven books and many articles. His most recent book, Making NAFTA Work; Corporate Strategies in a New North American Business Environment, was published by Lynne Reinner. Stephen Blank is a member of the Board of Directors of the Alliance for Higher Education in North America, the Board of Advisors of the Mexican Cultural Institute of New York and the Professional Advisory Council of the G8 Research Group. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2002, Dr. Blank was awarded L’Ordre National de Quebec by the Government of Quebec. Join us on March 13th for an evening of lively discussions.

27th The Penn Club will honor the spirit of Scottish poet Robert Burns at a special evening on January 27, a few days after the traditional celebration of Burns' birthday (January 25th). Not to be missed—but certainly not for the faint-hearted—the evening will also include the parade of the Haggis, accompanied by reading of Burns’ poem Address to a Haggis—a mainstay of many Burns dinners. For the uninitiated, Haggis is a Scottish pudding comprised of organ meat, oatmeal and onions, traditionally cooked in a sheep’s stomach, which is ceremonially sliced open with a sword at Burns dinners. It is said to be an acquired taste. Fortunately, the rest of the evening will include a Scottish-inspired menu that would have caused Burns himself to wax poetic. Scottish Smoked Salmon Napoleon Cock-a-Leekie Soup Roasted Aberdeen Angus Beef Cheddar Cheese with Apple and Walnuts Scottish Trifle Rest assured that the Penn Club will have enough fine Scotch whisky on hand for you to invoke your own poetic impulses.

24th CANY and Quebec Government House invite you to the following musical event. On Tuesday evening, January 24, 2006, at 7:00 p.m., two prominent Québec concert organists, Jean-Guy Proulx and Jacquelin Rochette, will present a joint recital on the new Casavant Frères pipe organ at The Brick Presbyterian Church, Park Avenue and 91st Street, in New York City’s Upper East Side. The recital is one in a yearlong series of event inaugurating the Brick Church organ. This unique pipe organ with 6,288 pipes has been the recipient of feature articles in both New York City's New York Times and in Montréal La Presse newspapers. This organ, built by the Québec firm of Casavant Frères Limitée of Saint-Hyacinthe, is not only the largest new pipe organ to be installed in New York City in over 50 years, it is also one of less than a handful of organs in North America that accurately reproduce the sounds of the great 19th century French pipe organs as built by the master organ builder Aristide Cavaill é-Coll. Jean-Guy Proulx is a professor of music at the Conservatory of Music in Québec City. He is also the titular organist of the Casavant organ at the Cathedral of Saint-Germain in Rimouski, Québec. For his Brick Church recital, Monsieur Proulx will play the Deuxième Choral by César-Auguste Franck and the Première Symphonie by Alexandre Guilmant. Monsieur Proulx has recorded widely and has been heard in Canada on Radio Canada and on other radio stations in North America and Europe. In addition to his recital career, Jacquelin Rochette is presently the Tonal Director of Casavant Frères Limitee where he is responsible for overseeing the tonal finishing of all new and rebuilt Casavant organs. Monsieur Rochette has also widely recorded and been heard on radio stations in North America and Europe. For his Brick Church recital, Monsieur Rochette will play the Première Choral by César-Auguste Franck and the final three movements of the Sixi ème Symphonie by Charles-Marie Widor. For further information, please contact Keith S. Toth, Brick Church's Minister of Music, at 212-289-4400, ext. 231 or visit the Brick Church website at www.brickchurch.org.
January 13th While it may seem like a risky thing to do on Friday the 13th, please join CANY as we travel to a swamp and put ourselves within striking distance of not one, but two, men wearing goalie masks. No, this isn’t an early 80’s horror flick — it’s live NHL hockey as the Vancouver Canucks lock horns with the New Jersey Devils in the Meadowlands at Continental Airlines Arena. Whether you’re a Canucks fan, a Devils supporter, or just a general hockey nut this is a great opportunity to see some great hockey. We’ve negotiated a special ticket price ($30 for a $52 face-value ticket) so you don’t have to feel guilty about spending that extra money on face paint. And don’t be deterred by the interstate travel implications. It really couldn’t be easier — the 15-min bus ride from Port Authority takes you directly to the Arena. Just don’t stray too far from the crowd if you see one of those goalies holding a chainsaw! Post-game drinks will be held at a suitable Manhattan establishment (TBA) to recount the goals, the checks, the thrills, and other high points of the trip out to the Meadowlands of New Jersey.
