CANY is excited to share special access to one of New York’s hottest shows! “La Vie”, created by the Montreal’s circus-arts theatre company, Les 7 Doigts de la Main, is a spicy cabaret show of dance, music, acrobatics and burlesque. Last summer, New York The evening will begin at 7:30 with pre-show drinks and a buffet dinner in the Speigel Ball Tent which offers some of the most spectacular views of the Brooklyn Bridge and East River. May 23rd The Canadian Association of New York is pleased to have as guest speaker The Honourable Shawn Graham, Premier of the Province of New Brunswick. Premier Graham’s talk, “Partnerships Toward Self-Sufficiency” will focus on strengthening bilateral relationships in energy and business between New York and New Brunswick. Biography As the Liberal Party began the process of selecting a new leader in 2002, Shawn Graham’s energy, commitment and fresh vision for New Brunswick caught the public’s attention. On May 12, 2002, he won a landslide victory to become the leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick. In doing so, he became the youngest Liberal leader and the youngest Leader of the Official Opposition in the country. Campaigning on a platform of “Standing up for People”, he captured national attention on June 9, 2003 when he and his Liberal Team increased the Liberal seat count from 7 to 26 of 55 seats in the Legislature. Under his leadership, the Official Opposition became one of the most productive in the province’s history introducing a record number of pieces of legislation and advancing an innovative and ambitious policy agenda. Today, as Premier, his Charter for Change sets out the foundation for a better New Brunswick. Premier Graham’s vision for the province is as straightforward as it is challenging. He wants New Brunswick to join the ranks of the “have” provinces by the year 2025. He is committed to putting New Brunswick on the road to self-sufficiency by turning New Brunswick into a leader in energy conservation and generation, by building the best education system in the country and by making job creation a priority again. Premier Graham and his wife, Roxanne, call both the Capital City and the small community of Mundleville “home.”

Dr. MacLean was the Chief Science Advisor for the International Space Station from 1993 until 1994, when he was appointed Director General of the Canadian Astronaut Program for two years. In August 1996 Dr. MacLean began mission specialist training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. After successfully completing basic training in 1998, he continued with advanced training while fulfilling technical duties in the NASA Astronaut Office Robotics Branch. More recently Dr. MacLean served as CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) for both the International Space Station (ISS) Program and the Shuttle Program, at the Johnson Space Center. In February 2002 Dr. MacLean was assigned to his second space flight. More recently, he served aboard the crew of STS-115 Atlantis (September 9-21, 2006) on the 19th mission to the International Space Station. Dr. MacLean is the first Canadian to operate Canadarm2 when the crew added trusses to the Station and deployed solar array panels.
May 9th The Canadian Association of New York is pleased to have as guest speaker The Honourable Lyle Oberg, Alberta’s Minister of Finance. Alberta Finance Minister, Dr. Lyle Oberg, recently tabled Alberta's budget for 2007-08 entitled "Budget 2007 - Managing our Growth". Alberta has gained worldwide prominence because of its large reserves of oil sands and the billions of dollars being invested to develop these reserves. Dr. Oberg will provide insights into the challenges of managing the government's fiscal plan in Canada's fastest growing economy. He will also talk about the tremendous opportunities that the thriving economy provides to people within and outside of Alberta. Biography Appointed to cabinet in 1997, Dr. Oberg first served as Minister of Family and Social Services. He launched a western Canadian initiative championing the identification and prevention of fetal alcohol syndrome. From May 1999 to November 2004 Dr. Oberg served as the Minister of Learning as well as the minister responsible for immigration. He was involved in the creation of Alberta’s Commission on Learning and implemented many of its recommendations, including the reduction of class sizes. He initiated a daily physical activity program to improve the health of students and also began the second-language initiative in Alberta schools to give students an edge in the world marketplace. Following his re-election in November 2004 Dr. Oberg was appointed Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation. He held this position until March 2006 and helped establish Alberta’s first public/private partnership (P3) to assist with the construction of the Anthony Henday freeway in Edmonton. Dr. Oberg was born and raised in the rural community of Forestburg. After graduating from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine in 1983, he practised as a family physician in Brooks, where he also served as a school trustee.

Want to give back to your community and meet some great new people? CANY will be joining over 4,000 other New York Cares volunteers to help make New York a cleaner, greener city. Sign up now for a day of good, clean fun as we help to paint, plant, clean and revitalize our city's parks and community spaces during the Annual Hands On New York Day. The goal is to revitalize 89 community spaces, throughout the five boroughs, in just one day! As a result of CANY’s continued involvement with New York Cares, we were fortunate to be designated a location in Manhattan this year. Our project will be to help paint classrooms, hallways, etc., and to help organize reading materials at the Stanley Isaacs Neighborhood Center which provides educational and recreational programs for children and teens. No skills required. We hope you can participate in this great event and help make our community a better place!
April 17th The Canadian Association of New York is pleased to have as guest speaker The Honourable Greg Sorbara, Ontario’s Minister of Finance and Chair of Treasury Board. Minister Sorbara will talk about Ontario’s new era of balanced budgets, sustainable surpluses and economic growth, a fairer tax climate and other issues as outlined in the 2007 Budget tabled on March 22, 2007. Biography Greg returned to the private sector in 1995 and remained active in his community and in business. He served as a director of the United Way of York Region from 1998 to 2001 and has been a member of the board of the York University Alumni Association for several years. Greg returned to the public arena in November 1999, when he was elected president of the Ontario Liberal Party; a position he held until February 2004. He also served as the party's campaign chair for the 2003 election. He was elected MPP for the riding of Vaughan-King-Aurora in a June 2001 by-election and was re-elected in the 2003 general election. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from York University's Glendon College and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. Greg and his wife, Katie, have six children and eight grandchildren.
March 27th With the ides of March upon us, there’s nothing better than some hot and heavy NHL playoff races to remind everyone that spring’s around the corner (at least according to the calendar). Please join the Canadian Association of New York on Tuesday, March 27th at Ship of Fools (1590 2nd Avenue b/w 82nd and 83rd) for a fun night of beer, wings and good ol’ fashioned hockey watching. With all 6 Canadian teams, all 3 New York area teams and 2 young superstars (Crosby vs. Ovechkin) facing off, there’s no shortage of storylines to capture your imagination. Cheer on your beloved Leafs and Canadiens as they do battle with the Hurricanes, Rangers, Islanders, and Bruins for the final playoff spots in the East. Marvel at the incredible skills of Sid the Kid and Alexander the Great. Commiserate with Oiler fans as Ryan Smyth doffs an Islanders jersey. Some of the games we ’ll be watching include: Pittsburgh at Washington (7:00pm) Admission is free, drink specials will be available, and hockey jerseys, foam fingers and face paint are encouraged.
March 23rd The Canadian Association of New York Foundation is pleased to have as guest speaker the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Canada's Minister of Finance who will discuss the Government's fiscal and economic priorities and highlights from his second budget, to be presented March 19, 2007. Biography Mr. Flaherty served as a Member of Ontario’s provincial legislature for the constituency of Whitby-Ajax from 1995 to 2005. During this period, he held a number of posts. Under Premier Eves, he served as the Minister of Enterprise, Opportunity and Innovation. Under Premier Harris, Mr. Flaherty was the Deputy Premier, Minister of Finance, Attorney General, Minister responsible for Native Affairs, Minister of Labour and Solicitor General, and Minister of Correctional Services. Most recently, as a member of the provincial opposition, he was Critic for Public Infrastructure Renewal. Mr. Flaherty graduated from Princeton University and has a law degree from Osgoode Law School. He was called to the Bar in 1975 and practised law for more than 20 years before entering politics. He is the past president of the Head Injury Association of the Durham region. Mr. Flaherty is married to Christine and they have triplet sons.

March 5th The Canadian Association of New York Foundation and the Canadian Consulate General are pleased to have as guest speaker the Honourable Carole Taylor, who will speak on the topic of British Columbia’s strong fiscal position and growing economy. Biography Ms. Taylor plays a key role in a government that over the past six years has overseen a remarkable transformation of British Columbia’s finances and economy. British Columbia is now a leader in economic growth, investment, and job creation. Over the past three years, the Province has received five credit rating upgrades from major bond rating agencies including a AAA-rating from Moody’s Investor Services. Finance Minister Taylor will outline the steps taken to maintain that positive momentum with strategic investments in infrastructure, the Pacific Gateway trade strategy, and British Columbia's preparations to showcase itself to the world with the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

February 22nd The Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association of New York will be held at Canadian Consulate, 1251 Avenue of the Americas (Canada Room - Concourse Level) on Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. Members must RSVP in advance to ensure entry. For security purposes, proper identification is required. NOTE: No one will be permitted into the Consulate unless name is on the clearance list. The meeting is open to all CANY members in good standing. All members attending the Annual General Meeting are invited to a cocktail reception following the meeting. February 17th and 18th We’ve had a great initial response for the second annual Central Park Canadian Invitational Ice Hockey Tourney at Lasker Rink. We will be following up with everyone who has contacted us about the tournament over the next few days. If you haven’t yet sent us an email, please do so as soon as possible as space is filling up. We will attempt to accommodate individuals, but preference will be given to full teams. Teams will be visiting from Toronto, Ottawa, Guelph and Montreal to play against various teams from NYC. The tournament will consist of each team playing a game on Saturday, with a post-game social in the East Village. On Sunday, there will be two Canada/NYC All-Star games played beginning at noon. Open to players of all levels and nationalities, the spirit of this Invitational centers on participation rather than competition and is intended to further the natural ties of friendship between Canadians and New Yorkers. If that isn't enough to warm the cockles of your heart, all proceeds net of costs will be donated to Ice Hockey in Harlem, an excellent charity that is supported by CANY. The cost of entering a team in the tourney is $1,000. This is an interesting opportunity to put together a Corporate team, or just assemble a group of friends. January 28th Join us for a fun "social" afternoon of curling on Sunday, January 28, 2007 at the Ardsley Curling Club in Ardsley, NY. Price includes dinner, open bar, curling and snacks at this wonderful curling oasis in Westchester. BEGINNERS AND GUESTS ARE WELCOME! The scoring and strategy (and other fine points, like sweeping, in-turns, out-turns, measurements, curling etiquette and delivery techniques) of this Olympic Winter sport will be explained and demonstrated. Socializing in the "Warm Room" (complete with fireplace, easy chairs, a bar, television, etc.) before and after curling is an integral part of the experience. "Canada is The Superpower of Curling. None of the 27 other curling
nations, not even Scotland, where the sport originated, comes close to Canada's
curling prowess. Three out of every four curlers who walk the Earth are Canadian." All you need to bring (wear) are loose fitting pants, a sweater, gloves/mitts and flat-soled shoes (sneakers are fine).
January 18th The Canadian Association of New York Foundation and the Canadian Consulate General are privileged to have as guest luncheon speaker The Honourable Gary Doer, Premier of the Province of Manitoba. Biography Mr. Doer’s government has delivered a balanced budget every year since his election as Premier in 1999. The relative size of Manitoba’s debt has declined by almost 20 per cent, and taxes have been reduced in four areas, including the first cut in corporate income taxes since the Second World War. Recognizing this prudent approach to managing the province’s economy, Moody’s Investor Services and the Dominion Bond Rating Service have upgraded the province’s credit rating. Under Premier Doer’s leadership, Manitoba’s growth rate has routinely been above the national average, unemployment and youth unemployment rates have been among the lowest in the country, job growth has almost doubled, and private investment growth has consistently increased. Strong economic growth continues as Manitoba becomes a world leader in developing and exporting clean renewable energy such as hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, ethanol, and biodiesel. In 2005 Premier Doer was chosen as one of Business Week magazines Top 20 world leaders on climate change and clean energy development. Premier Doer remains a committed partner in strengthening his community. He has served as vice-president of the Manitoba Special Olympics; board member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Football Club; Prairie Theatre Exchange; the Niagara Institute; and, the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba. Premier Doer is married to Ginny Devine. They have two children.
Ice Hockey in Harlem Annual Sports Auction with Members of the New York Rangers Join us on January 17, 2007, when Ice Hockey In Harlem will be honoring the Canadian Association of New York at its Annual Sports Auction with Members of the New York Rangers. This event will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Ice Hockey In Harlem, a not-for-profit youth organization based in the economically challenged community of East Harlem that uses the sport of ice hockey to promote academic achievement, responsibility, teamwork, and most importantly life skills. Since its creation, Ice Hockey In Harlem has enriched the lives of more than 1,000 inner-city boys and girls. TheAnnual Sports Auction brings together past and present players from the New York Rangers for a great evening of hors d’oeuvres and open bar, a live and silent auction, and a raffle. Ice Hockey In Harlem will be honoring the Canadian Association of New York with a special presentation that evening to acknowledge our support and dedication over the years.
