CANY is excited to share special access to one of New York’s hottest shows!

“La Vie”, created by the Montreal’s circus-arts theatre company, Les 7 Doigts de la Main, is a spicy cabaret show of dance, music, acrobatics and burlesque. Last summer, New York
raved about “Absinthe”. Now, “La Vie” is turning up the heat at Spiegelworld.

The evening will begin at 7:30 with pre-show drinks and a buffet dinner in the Speigel Ball Tent which offers some of the most spectacular views of the Brooklyn Bridge and East River. Showtime begins promptly at 9:30 in the intimate 350 seat Spiegeltent. “It’s the intimacy” The Economist notes, “this proximity to the performers that gives these shows their special feel.”

For those of us who wish to carry on we have free entry to Club Spiegel after “La Vie.” Spiegeltent is transformed into a dance floor with a breathtaking mix of music, dancing and light.

The Honourable Shawn Graham,
Premier, Province of New Brunswick

Bilateral Relationships in Energy and Business

The Canadian Association of New York is pleased to have as guest speaker The Honourable Shawn Graham, Premier of the Province of New Brunswick.

Premier Graham’s talk, “Partnerships Toward Self-Sufficiency” will focus on strengthening bilateral relationships in energy and business between New York and New Brunswick.

Biography

On September 18, 2006, Shawn Graham was elected New Brunswick’s 31st Premier. Premier Graham has served as a member of the Legislative Assembly since his October 1998 by-election victory in the riding of Kent. He was re-elected in the general elections of June 7, 1999 and June 9, 2003.

As the Liberal Party began the process of selecting a new leader in 2002, Shawn Graham’s energy, commitment and fresh vision for New Brunswick caught the public’s attention. On May 12, 2002, he won a landslide victory to become the leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick. In doing so, he became the youngest Liberal leader and the youngest Leader of the Official Opposition in the country. Campaigning on a platform of “Standing up for People”, he captured national attention on June 9, 2003 when he and his Liberal Team increased the Liberal seat count from 7 to 26 of 55 seats in the Legislature. Under his leadership, the Official Opposition became one of the most productive in the province’s history introducing a record number of pieces of legislation and advancing an innovative and ambitious policy agenda.

Today, as Premier, his Charter for Change sets out the foundation for a better New Brunswick. Premier Graham’s vision for the province is as straightforward as it is challenging. He wants New Brunswick to join the ranks of the “have” provinces by the year 2025. He is committed to putting New Brunswick on the road to self-sufficiency by turning New Brunswick into a leader in energy conservation and generation, by building the best education system in the country and by making job creation a priority again.

Premier Graham and his wife, Roxanne, call both the Capital City and the small community of Mundleville “home.”

Central Park Canadian Invitational Ice Hockey Tourney

We’ve had a great initial response for the second annual Central Park Canadian Invitational Ice Hockey Tourney at Lasker Rink. We will be following up with everyone who has contacted us about the tournament over the next few days. If you haven’t yet sent us an email, please do so as soon as possible as space is filling up. We will attempt to accommodate individuals, but preference will be given to full teams.

Teams will be visiting from Toronto, Ottawa, Guelph and Montreal to play against various teams from NYC. The tournament will consist of each team playing a game on Saturday, with a post-game social in the East Village. On Sunday, there will be two Canada/NYC All-Star games played beginning at noon.

Open to players of all levels and nationalities, the spirit of this Invitational centers on participation rather than competition and is intended to further the natural ties of friendship between Canadians and New Yorkers. If that isn't enough to warm the cockles of your heart, all proceeds net of costs will be donated to Ice Hockey in Harlem, an excellent charity that is supported by CANY.

The cost of entering a team in the tourney is $1,000. This is an interesting opportunity to put together a Corporate team, or just assemble a group of friends. Even if you are an individual that is interested in participating, please contact us and perhaps we can place you on a team.

We expect the tourney to grow next year and in subsequent years, so this is your opportunity to establish your team early.

Please contact Dean Keyworth at dean.keyworth@us.hsbc.com if you are interested. Space is limited, so please get in touch ASAP. Hope to see you on the ice!

Luncheon Series: The Honourable Gary Doer
Premier of Manitoba

Looking North
Doing Business with America's Largest Trading Partner

The Canadian Association of New York Foundation and the Canadian Consulate General are privileged to have as guest luncheon speaker The Honourable Gary Doer, Premier of the Province of Manitoba.

Biography
Gary Doer is Manitoba’s 20th Premier. His government was first sworn into office on October 5, 1999. In June 2003, he was re-elected as Manitoba Premier with an increased government majority.

Mr. Doer’s government has delivered a balanced budget every year since his election as Premier in 1999. The relative size of Manitoba’s debt has declined by almost 20 per cent, and taxes have been reduced in four areas, including the first cut in corporate income taxes since the Second World War. Recognizing this prudent approach to managing the province’s economy, Moody’s Investor Services and the Dominion Bond Rating Service have upgraded the province’s credit rating.

Under Premier Doer’s leadership, Manitoba’s growth rate has routinely been above the national average, unemployment and youth unemployment rates have been among the lowest in the country, job growth has almost doubled, and private investment growth has consistently increased.

Strong economic growth continues as Manitoba becomes a world leader in developing and exporting clean renewable energy such as hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, ethanol, and biodiesel. In 2005 Premier Doer was chosen as one of Business Week magazines Top 20 world leaders on climate change and clean energy development.

Premier Doer remains a committed partner in strengthening his community. He has served as vice-president of the Manitoba Special Olympics; board member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Football Club; Prairie Theatre Exchange; the Niagara Institute; and, the Board of Governors of the University of Manitoba.

Premier Doer is married to Ginny Devine. They have two children.
